Fire Engine Chubb Pacesetter in Edinburgh, Midlothian for sale

Fire Engine Chubb Pacesetter

Proudly presenting Hurtle the Chubb Pacesetter. This is a 'one of a kind', unique vehicle being the only functioning one in the UK and as far as I'm aware the only functioning one left in the World! There were only 10 of them ever built as prototypes, with an unlimited budget and a design brief to create the fire engine of the future. 8 of them were shipped to South Africa and Australia. This one was kept as a demonstration vehicle to tour different brigades and was used by Chubb for tyre and performance testing. It was then sold on to ICE Nobel Division in Ayrshire in service as a working fire protection vehicle, hence the old Scottish number plate. Out of the 10, Hurtle was one of the 2 which were fitted with the Detroit super charger engine, the rest all got the common Perkins V8. If you know your engines this should really excite you as these are rare as hens teeth on UK motor vehicles which aren't ships. Launched at the Interfire Exhibition, Olympia, London in 1975, the Chubb 'Pacesetter' was designed by Chubb Fire Security Ltd and Loughborough Consultants Ltd, a company set up by Loughborough University of Technology in collaboration with the Merseyside Fire Brigade. Of similar concept to the earlier Leyland 'Firemaster' but remaining only a design exercise, the 'Pacesetter' called for a 238 bhp rear-mounted 6V71 V6 Detroit Diesel engine, Allison TC470 4-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and front mounted 4,546 lpm (1,000gpm) pto-driven 2 stage Godvia UFP centrifugal pump. Mounted on a Boughton Scorpio high performance chassis, which could accelerate to 64 kmph (40mph) in just 18 seconds and had a top speed of 121 kmph (75 mph), this vehicle's integral fibreglass and light compartment constructed from a single-piece fibreglass moulding. Step height was only 457 mm (18 ins) in triple-fold power operated doors were located on the nearside. Gross weight was 10,160 kg (10 tons). The V5 actually states 9.6 tonnes (to allow for carrying 2 tonnes of water however I made a few modifications detailed below and have taken her to a weigh bridge, the unladen weight is now 7.1 tonnes. She is in extremely good condition for a 40 year old vehicle. Hardly any rust due to the sealed under carriage, fibreglass body and lavish coating of Alloy checkplate. Recent maintenance works include -New exhaust system. -Replacement drag link end to make the steering super responsive and safe. -4 new rear tyres (over £1000) -Recent spray job, used to be bright orange. -Servicing of the air systems. -Lamp replacements. -New fuel filters -Everything works as it should including the sirens, 2 air horns and 4 flashing lights (obviously disconnected as per rules) I'll take her in for a last service when she sells to make sure the new owner gets her in prime condition. She has a varied and well documented history which is contained in the thick pile of manuals which come with her. She has been used by the BBC for tv and film productions and has attended many shows, exhibitions and festivals. I purchased her 2 years ago from a fellow down South who had lovingly refurbished the vehicle kept it well stored, maintained and made lots of improvements over 10 years of ownership. It was a very reluctant sell from him and a happy day for me. The 2 years which I have owned it have been amazing and I am so sad to have to sell her. I swore I never would, alas I have lost my storage facility and my circumstances have changed so I feel it's best to let someone else have the privilege. Learning to let go and not becoming my possessions has brought me to this bittersweet decision. I used Hurtle as the main feature of our fire shows, My group PyroCeltica have toured all over Scotland in her carrying all the pyro kit for our Fire theatre shows. She has had so much attention and admiration during that time. I made several modifications to suit our purpose. Namely removing the 2000 litre fibreglass water tank and 2 x 100 metre first aid hose reels (both available to the new owner if wanted with the sale). I paneled out the interior with sterling board to allow maximum capacity for stowing. We custom made a wedge attachment to level the roof. There was previously a slant to allow for a ladder but I wanted a flat roof for fire performance on top. This can be removed easily to restore it to its former design, I also installed safety railings made out of alloy scaffold barrel which double up as roof racks for carrying a large load on top. We also attached sturdy ratchet mounts through the framework to securely tie down the load. To access the roof we made a set of super sturdy wide wooden stairs with handrail for performers to easily climb, these have a crafty quick release mechanism to allow them to be demount-ed and stowed with ease. I have installed a 2 kw Turbosound P.A. These are 2 vintage stadium speakers almost as old as the engine itself, In their time they were the best money could buy designed by Tony Andrews who went on to create Funktion 1 sound systems. They have been recently re-coned and serviced, the old school sound that comes out of them is super rich and very punchy. These are worth a small fortune by themselves and come as part of the sale if desired along with the 2 subs which get stowed on the roof. The changes I made make it ideal as a performance vehicle, we have had dj's and musicians on the roof, it's perfect for public speeches, dance, physical theatre and you can even fit a band up there. It has also been designed as a roaming vehicle with a space at the back for an on-board generator so you can parade whilst playing music with performance happening on top. Basically its a ready made business opportunity for the right person with a go get em attitude. I have had her in muddy fields and off road over rough terrain, she handles like a dream in every circumstance. By far the best vehicle I have ever had the pleasure of driving. The rear mounted engine gives her loads of power, well proportioned weight distribution and traction driving from the rear, she flies through the mud when everyone else gets stuck. The allison fully automatic gearbox makes it kind of like a giant go-kart. The spring leafs on her are huge to accommodate the extra weight of 2000 litres of water and fire fighting kit but without the burden she bounces over uneven ground with a huge clearance. On the road she is lightning fast. Boy racers really don't expect to be burned off at the lights like that. Super quick acceleration and a fast climb to top speed. She flies past most vehicles on the motorway and will sit steady with the pedal to the metal at 75mph all day long with the retrofitted cooler fans at the rear. She has a towbar attachment installed by the previous owner who said he towed a large caravan and never even felt it. I never towed anything but carried a motherload of heavy kit and couldn't tell the difference between empty. Basically she pulls like a train with a hefty towing capacity as yet untold. The roof comes right off by loosening bolts, this was for servicing the tank but is how I got those jumbo speakers in there. When I first removed the tank I thought hang on a mo this would make an epic mobile jacuzzi. Then I thought better of it. The front mounted Godiva 500 pump is a thing of great beauty which I was told by the previous owner is fully functional. I never tried it as I didn't have the right hoses. I thought of selling it separately as it is apparently worth several thousand even as scrap because it is made of a rare type of gun metal but even more when fully functional. Slightly not so good points. - The diesel heater in the cab is broken, never bothered me just put on an extra jumper if your cold, it can be easily replaced if desired. - The front tyres are starting to crack on the side walls, I have been told this is OK and they still have years Really, Really good points - This vehicle is MOT exempt. - This vehicle is Tax exempt this is obviously a great bonus. To renew your tax simply type in the reg plate on VOSA online and the amount comes up £0.00 then click buy. I just did it so it is good for 1 year. - Very cheap to insure. I have a cherished vehicle, fully comprehensive policy with Adrian flux which costs £160 per year. - Very Cheap breakdown recovery policy for historic vehicles which costs £150 per year allowing up to 2 tows. The piece of mind this gives me is unreal. Basically she is very cheap to keep on the road and fully covered for any mishaps. You are welcome to come and view her prior to purchase but please only if you are very seriously interested as I am a busy guy. But first look at the video I made as it may be enough for you.
